James’s
rise from local DJ to major league player has been meteoric by
anyone’s standards,
Today
he commands the respect of the some of the most revered house
DJs in the world as well as audiences in excess of 2,000 people.
His route to the top has been one based on his love of the music
and commitment to the scene. Now one of the most influential people
in dance music, James Algate is the consummate professional and
a hugely effective DJ.
James
is committed to seriously good house music. His route to the top
began locally where he spun, like many others, for local crowds
in bars and small clubs. His talent and professionalism soon landed
him a string of gigs up and down the country before his calling
card was dealt. Whilst in Ibiza , Godskitchen
promoter and advocate of all things funky – Tyrone De
Savrey granted James the chance to spin on the terrace
at Amnesia in an ‘I bet you’re crap’ –
‘I
bet I’m not’ kind of show down. James proved his talent, much
to the dismay of Tyrone
and
had the terrace rocking for hours. And that is where it all began…
It
was that set that led to his most prestigious residency to date.
Having impressed the promoters so much James was reeled in to
host the then unheard of night Babooshka at
CODE Code became the venue that put Mr Algate
firmly on the DJing leader board where he cut his teeth playing
alongside DJ luminaries such as Danny Rampling, David
Morales, Erick Morillo and Frankie Knuckles
week in week out.
The
summer of 2001 saw James return to Ibiza and back to Godskitchen
this year as weekly host of Babooshka on the
terrace. A blinding summer ensued where James continued to build
contacts, prestige and an army of adoring fans. Fourteen events
throughout the summer meant the baby Babooshka had grown into
a full sized clubbing force and James had grown with it. Taking
full advantage of the white island, James of course was invited
to spin at pre parties at the legendary Mambos and
the newest contender at the time Coastline.
On July 29 th 2001 James made his festival debut at the awesome
Godskitchen Global Gathering. Yet again hosting
the Babooshka arena as a true resident, he was joined by house
heavy weights Harry ‘Choo Choo’ Romero, Allister
Whitehead, Junior Sanchez,
Joey
Negro, Jazzy M, Norman Jay and
many more in front of a sell out crowd of 25,000 revelers. This
proved to be a day that went down in dance music history and one
that set James up firmly for 2002.
Now
firmly affiliated with the Babooshka brand, 2002 saw James further
his commitment.
He
spent another hugely successful season in Ibiza , this time holding
fort at the back room
in
Eden and Godskitchen Global Gathering
2002 was truly a stunning spectacle.
The
only UK dance festival to sell out in the UK , James this time
spun to 35,000 clubbers on the hottest day in the UK .
James
has since been booked for regular appearances at Passion,
Golden and Thompsons Garage In Belfast.
He also played guest sets for Galaxy 102.2 and
Ministry of Sound Radio all adding further credibility
to his DJing profile and ensuring he picks up more and more fans
on the way.
The
past 2 years have seen James continue his quest for DJ super stardom
and build himself a reputation as one of the most consistent and
reliable DJs around. As Godskitchen shifted their musical policy
slightly so they found a place for James in many of their line
ups and he quickly became a staple of the GK family playing sets
alongside the biggest names in the business every week at AIR
(the venue previously known as CODE). This commitment to the club
has earned him loyal followers and has provided a platform he
can now build on.
Now
in 2004 James is quite the accomplished DJ. So much so that he
has moved the talent into the studio … and the result has been
very impressive. His first track ‘Sweet Child’ under
his Punk Rok guise was one of the most inspired
house records of the year. Sampling the Guns & Roses
track of the same name James delivered a sensational
tribal beast that had the disco rocking all summer and beyond.
It received huge support from Erick Morillo, Steve Lawler, Nic
Fanciulli and Radio 1 DJ Fergie.
Having
realised his musical potential James is heading straight back
into the studio with his Punk Rok hat on to whisk up some more
dancefloor weapons.
Catch
him if you can … it’ll be worth the effort…
